What keeps Main Street businesses open is the community support. Local support, obviously shopping in this community so we can pay our rent and our employees and keep it going. Support from the customers and from the residents in and around the area. The community spirit that we have here… we have a lot of regulars. That’s the main driving force is to get the support from the community. Main Street Cafe was originally owned by my aunt. I did keep the original menu, the bacon breakfast, some mild lunch fare. I did expand the menu with heartier sandwiches, club houses and beef dips and I added a lot of ceasar salads, garden salads, local honey. I have some preserves. These are things that I source locally from people within this community. Here at the Canadian Creamery Emporium, we sell ice cream treats, frozen ice cream from hand scoop, to soft serve, sundaes and desserts such as homemade butter tarts, candy apples, fudge, candy, gourmet popcorn. We carry a wide range of seafood, so we have red snapper, sardines, skate… We have mahi mahi… It’s a wide range. At least every culture can come in and find something. So it’s a mixture of Caribbean stuff and things from European countries. So I sell tiles, flooring, vinyl, engineered flooring. Most of these are from Italy and Spain. I used to do design stuff for different stores and tiles is like the same idea, but for homeowners. So it’s more fashionable, more artistic. We opened this business in Shelburne to bring employment for the young teenagers and young adults and to get people out and about and to feel a little sense of normality again. It’s a really friendly environment. People are great – just the best to work with. Even the community around the ice cream shop is just phenomenal. Everyone’s super friendly. They’re coming in for ice cream. They’re coming in at a good time. We try to give that to them. Community support has been phenomenal. We are gaining popularity within the community and we’ve met so many wonderful people that just continue to support us. Personally, I feel that shopping local is very important in your own community. We want the town to flourish. It’s a lot of Dufferin County, a lot of Shelburne but now it’s going widespread. Like I have people driving up from Collingwood and even from Toronto. The community support has been great actually. I’ve met a few people when it first opened and they told their friends and their friends and their neighbors. Everyone is surprised that I built this store in Shelburne. It’s very unique for this town and for Dufferin County. We encourage people to support local because we’re able to give back to the community, provide jobs… It enables someone like me to keep my employees paid and they are going to go down the street and create an economic spinoff by spending it at the pub down the street or the drug store. It keeps our money in our back pocket. It strengthens the town’s economy. It shares wealth and growth throughout the small businesses and town. It gets people out there and exposed to what their town and other businesses have to offer. If we want to see our community grow and thrive, we need to keep our money in our community and support our local shops. Every small purchase makes a positive impact. Don’t forget, support the burne. Hashtag support the burne. Support the burne. Everyone in and around Shelburne support the burne.
